Tickling interview with Lote Vilma

-Hi Lote! What do you like about drawing?

I like how abstract drawing is. I like the fact that through drawing I can discover my inner world. I like that one doesn´t need much to draw – a pencil and a paper. Or sand and a finger. Or a foggy window. I’m interested in the quality of lines. I like that with one line one can express so much. I think that drawing is quite an intimate occupation. And it is something real. It’s a language.

-What kind of figures come naturally when you sit to draw with no plans?

I often draw different plants, flowers, leaves, animals (dogs!), faces, strange characters, vases, trees, clouds, houses.

-Do you have any childhood game or belief that you preserve until now?

I still like to be tickled and to tickle others. If I see a small platform or stairs I feel the urge to step on it. Since childhood I have the belief that I want to make art and write.

-In which ways is the Lote kid similar to the actual Lote?

Mostly I feel like that kid Lote is still inside me and sometimes pokes out her little head to make herself be seen. During those moments I become again a bit like the kid Lote. It’s not always pleasant! When I was a kid I liked to play games of imagination and I still kind of do it in my art and poems.

-What things did you draw as a child?

I liked to write stories and then illustrate them. I also drew stuff that was around me – my family, relatives, portraits of my toys, different types of human lips, musical instruments. I had these notebooks with drawings and texts, kind of like zines in today’s context.

-How did you discover the world of illustrated books as a kid? Which are your longtime favorite books?

My mom used to read to me, so I guess that was the beginning of it. I liked to read illustrated books with some fantasy adventures. Some childhood favorites that I still like are Karel Čapek’s «I Had a Dog and a Cat» and books from Tove Jansson.

-Your name is beautiful. Where does it come from?

Thank you! «Lote» is a name that my parents chose, but «Vilma» is my grandgrandmothers name, and she wished that I would have it too, so now I have two names! I feel like «Lote» is the one who draws and «Vilma» is the one who writes poems. I don’t use often my last name, because it sounds more simple this way.

-What is your relation with dreaming? Is there a personal simbology in them?

I find dreams very interesting – the more you think about them the more interesting and meaningful they become. For a while I liked to search in the dream symbol dictionary the things that I saw, I’ve found various amazing interpretations there. Last year I also wrote a few poems that were basically my dreams written down. Dreams are so poetic and strange, I find that it’s a great material for art and poetry. For me, water in a dream symbolizes feelings and emotions. This meaning has spilled in my creative work as well.

-Which animals or people do you dream often?

I often dream about the people that I meet daily, but sometimes they are someone from my past. You never know who you might meet in a dream! I don’t think that I dream about certain animals too often, but recently I saw a dream with a talking cow in a slaughterhouse. She was gossiping to another cow about some stupid horse.

-Do your dreams have a real influence in your life?

I find that most often the dreams can only say something about what is going on inside me. Other than that – I feel that they sometimes stay with me during the day, making me feel different.

-What do you like about Brenda´s dream?

Brenda’s dream has a very powerful emotion. It feels both empowering and scary.

-Please tell a recent dream of your own.

Recently I had a dream: I enter my home and there are some fishes laying on the floor. A huge cat comes out from one of the rooms and looks dangerous and nervous. I try to walk past it but he suddenly bites my leg and I shout.

-¡Hola Lote! ¿Por qué te gusta dibujar?

Me gusta lo abstracto que es el dibujo. Me gusta que a través del dibujo puedo descubrir mi mundo interior y que sólo necesito lápiz y papel. O mi dedo sobre la arena. O una ventana empañada. Me interesa el potencial de la línea. Con una línea puedo expresar muchísimo. Dibujar es una ocupación un tanto íntima. Y real. Es un lenguaje.

-¿Qué cosas aparecen naturalmente cuando dibujas sin un propósito?

A menudo dibujo diversas plantas, flores, hojas, animales (¡perros!), caras, personajes raros, jarrones, árboles, nubes, casas.

-¿Conservas algún hábito de tu infancia?

Me gusta hacer y que me hagan cosquillas. Si veo una pequeña plataforma o escaleras, siento el impulso de subirme. Desde pequeña sabía que quería hacer arte y escribir.

-¿Se parece la pequeña Lote a la actual?

Siento que la niña Lote aún vive en mí, asomando de vez en cuando la cabeza para hacerse ver. En esos momentos me vuelvo un poco niña, ¡no siempre es agradable! Cuando era niña me encantaba jugar con la imaginación y todavía lo hago en mis poemas y arte.

-¿Qué cosas solías dibujar de pequeña?

Me gustaba escribir historias e ilustrarlas. También dibujaba lo que me rodeaba: mi familia, parientes, retratos de mis juguetes, diversos tipos de labios humanos, instrumentos musicales. Tenía cuadernos con dibujos y textos, un poco como los zines de hoy en día.

-¿Cómo descubriste los libros ilustrados? ¿Cuáles eran tus favoritos de niña?

Mi mamá acostumbraba leerme, creo que así inició todo. Me gustaban los libros ilustrados de fantasía y aventuras. Algunos de mis favoritos siendo niña -y que aún me gustan- son “I Had a Dog and a Cat” de Karel Čapek y los libros de Tove Jansson.

-Lote Vilma es un nombre muy bonito. ¿Cuál es su historia?

¡Gracias! Mis padres eligieron el nombre de “Lote”. “Vilma” es el nombre de mi bisabuela, que quería que también yo lo tuviera, ¡y ahora tengo dos nombres! Creo que “Lote” es quien dibuja y “Vilma” la que escribe poemas. Casi no uso mi apellido, por simplificar.

-¿Qué relación tienes con tus sueños? ¿Hay algo que sueñes que simbolice algo en tu vida?

Los sueños me parecen muy interesantes. Cuanto más pienso en ellos, más interesantes y significativos se vuelven. En algún momento me gustaba buscar lo que soñaba en un diccionario de sueños. Encontré algunas interpretaciones increíbles. El año pasado escribí unos cuantos poemas que eran básicamente mis sueños. Los sueños son tan poéticos y extraños que me parecen geniales como material para el arte y la poesía. Soñar con agua simboliza para mí los sentimientos y emociones. Este símbolo ha conseguido colarse en mi trabajo creativo.

-¿Con qué personas y animales acostumbras soñar?

A menudo sueño con las personas que veo a diario, pero algunas veces aparece alguien del pasado. ¡Nunca sabes a quién te encontrarás en un sueño! No hay un animal concreto con el que acostumbre soñar, pero recientemente soñé con una vaca que hablaba. Estaba en un matadero, chismeando con otra vaca sobre un estúpido caballo.

-¿Has tenido algún sueño que haya influido de algún modo en tu vida?

La mayoría de mis sueños sólo expresan lo que pasa dentro de mí. Aparte de eso, algunas veces me acompañan durante el día haciéndome sentir diferente.

-¿Qué opinas del sueño de Brenda, que has ilustrado?

El sueño de Brenda es emocionante. Poderoso y espantoso al mismo tiempo.

-Cuéntame un sueño reciente.

Hace poco soñé que entraba en mi casa y había algunos peces en el suelo. Un enorme gato salió de uno de los cuartos, peligroso y nervioso. Intenté pasar y de pronto me mordió la pierna y grité.
