夢の中でぼくは悪魔に追いかけられ、助けを求め走っていた。でもそこに人はいなくて、ひとりぼっちのぼくを、誰も助けてくれない。携帯電話ももっていないから911にかけることもできない。ぼくは死ぬところだったけど、そこで目が覚めた。

-¡Hola Yumi! ¿Por qué has elegido ilustrar el sueño de Humberto? Porque cuando era niña yo también soñaba que me perseguían, y era espantoso. Creo que no tuve una infancia tan divertida.
-¿Soñabas también que te perseguía un demonio? Sí, un demonio con la apariencia de “Maneki-neko” (招き猫), el gato japonés de la buena suerte, ¡pero era enorme! Es un recuerdo terrible, haha.
-Ahora, como mujer adulta, ¿qué apariencia tiene el demonio? Es la voz que suena en mi cabeza cuando pierdo la confianza.
-Cuéntame quién o qué despertó tu gusto por dibujar. Tal vez fue mi madre. Empecé a dibujar con lápices y bolis.
-¿Qué tanto te pareces a la Yumi que fuiste de niña? Somos igualitas. Algo tímidas y nos encanta hablar y dibujar.
-Si construyéramos un parque temático con tus sueños, ¿qué veríamos? Una casa embrujada. La he visitado tantas veces en mis sueños… Navegaríamos sobre un río estrecho metidos en un pequeño bote (sería la versión tenebrosa del “It´s a Small World” de Disneyland).
-¿Hay en Japón alguna creencia relacionada con los sueños? Se llama “Masayume” (正夢). Es la creencia de que los sueños se vuelven realidad. Excepto si los cuentas. Por eso mantenemos en secreto aquellos sueños que deseamos que se hagan realidad.
-¿Qué disfrutas hacer además de dibujar? ¡Ver películas!
-Cuéntame un sueño reciente. Un amigo me daba una botella de licor para una fiesta, yo buscaba un lugar donde enfriarla mientras empezaba la celebración. No sé por qué pero había tumbas en la casa, y finalmente decidía poner la botella en una tumba… No quería que este sueño se volviera realidad, así que por supuesto se lo conté a mi marido.
-Hi Yumi! What do you like about Humberto´s dream? Why did you choose to illustrate it? When I was a child, I also had scary dreams like being chased. I think my childhood wasn´t so fun.
-Did you also dream that a demon was chasing you? Yes, it was “Maneki Neko” (招き猫 ). It´s is cat ornament for good luck in Japan (please google it!), but this was so big! It is a very scary memory, haha.
-What is your idea of a demon now, as an adult? It´s the voice in my head when I lose confidence.
-Who introduced you to drawing? Maybe my mother. I started to draw with pencils and pens.
-How similar is the Yumi kid from your actual self? We´re exactly the same. We´re shy and love talking and drawing.
-If there was a thematic park constructed with your dreams, what would it be? A haunted house. I went there so many times in my dreams… Riding a small boat, down a narrow river (the scary version of “It’s a Small World” in Disneyland).
-Is there any japanese popular belief related with dreams? Yes, “Masayume” (正夢 ). The belief that dreams come true. Except if you tell someone about it, then it´ll never happen. So we keep secret those dreams that we wish to come true.
-What do you enjoy to do besides drawing? Watching movies!
-Please share a recent dream of your own. I received a bottle of alcohol for a party from my friend. I started looking for a place to chill it before the party begins. I don’t know why but there were some graves in the house, and finally I decided to place it in a grave… Of course I don’t want this dream to come true, so I told it to my husband!

-Hi Arina! What is your relation with the mirrows?
Hi there! Recently I’ve read the theory, that all mirrors absorb all the stories that happened in front of them. That made me think that buying an old mirror with history is a bad idea, you never know what happened there:) Now I’m trying to smile at my reflection and do crazy dance moves to fix only good vibes at my home mirrors.
-What do you like about Iker´s dream? What are you highlighting in your illustration?
I really liked that this is a very simple and positive dream. There are no supernatural plots or magical events, but there is clearly a hint of a happy mood of the mind. I think Iker is pretty both outside and inside! I made his dream as a center of the whole composition and added my own fantasy surroundings to highlight that this story didn´t happen in reality.
-How is your self-image in your dreams? I mean, have you dreamed yourself in the body of another person, or being an animal?
It can be different from time to time. But I remember one dream, when I left my body lying on the floor, all world had stopped, I was walking and travelling to other countries, but there was no movement and life at all. After a long travel I came back to my body as a spirit, and softly lying back to this shell. Then I woke up, and it felt like it wasn’t a dream at all.
-Is the actual Arina similar to the Arina kid? Do you perform any activity that keeps you connected with your childhood?
I believe that a part of me is still a kid. It’s because of my way of living and thinking, my work brings to it a lot! I think crazy dances with closest friends can bring me back to this childish feeling of freedom. Probably that activity can bring anyone back to the roots:)
-Do you remember a dream from your childhood?
I remember one scary dream which repeated several times, it’s very abstract and more about feelings I had. In a red atmosphere I saw a small children house, and then some kind of iron pipe bended, accompanied with a horrible sound similar to scream. That’s very weird indeed.
-Please tell a recent dream of your own.
Today I dreamed that I went camping with friends in the wild forest. We walked long enough until we reached the russian bathhouse! Around it grew crystals that could be taken. At the end, one women gave a birth right inside the bathhouse and all of us went to swim in cold the river. Felt weird describing it! What a crazy stuff happens in my head.
-¡Hola Arina! ¿Cómo te llevas con los espejos?
¡Hola! Hace poco leí que los espejos absorben las historias que ocurrieron delante de ellos. Visto así, no es buena idea comprar espejos viejos, nunca sabes lo que hay dentro 🙂 Frente a los espejos de casa sonrío y bailo juguetonamente para llenarlos de buenas vibras.
-¿Qué cosa te gusta del sueño de Iker? ¿Qué cuenta tu dibujo?
Me gusta mucho que sea un sueño simple y positivo, donde no hay historias sobrenaturales ni mágicas pero sí una clara alusión al optimismo. Creo que Iker es bello por fuera y por dentro. Dibujé su sueño como centro de la composición y en la atmósfera añadí pinceladas de mi propia fantasía para indicar que se trata de un sueño.
-¿Cómo te sueñas?
Cada vez varía. Recuerdo un sueño donde dejé mi cuerpo acostado en el suelo, el mundo se detuvo y yo estuve caminando y viajando a otros países, pero no había vida ni movimiento. Después de un largo viaje, mi espíritu regresó suavemente a su caparazón. Luego desperté y sentí que fue real.
-¿Te pareces a la niña que fuiste? ¿Qué actividad te reconecta con tu infancia?
En parte sigo siendo niña. Por mi forma de vivir y pensar, ¡y gracias a mi trabajo! Creo que los bailes locos con mis amigos cercanos me devuelven la sensación de libertad infantil. Probablemente el baile consigue que cualquiera reconecte con sus raíces 🙂
-¿Recuerdas alguno de los sueños que tuviste de niña?
Recuerdo uno de miedo que se repetía mucho. Es muy abstracto y emocional. En una atmósfera roja veía una pequeña casa para niños, luego un tubo de fierro se doblaba, acompañado de un sonido espantoso parecido a un grito. Muy extraño.
-Cuéntame un sueño reciente.
Hoy soñé que acampaba en el bosque silvestre junto con mis amigos. Caminamos mucho hasta encontrar un baño ruso. Alrededor crecían cristales que podías llevar. Al final una mujer dio a luz dentro del baño ruso y nosotros nos metimos a nadar al río helado. Es raro contarlo. ¡Qué locuras hay en mi cabeza!
